(Page 3) HISTORICAL SKETCH Early in 1867 Joseph Baldwin, then of Indiana, decided to establish a private normal school at Kirksville, Missouri. Accordingly on September 2d of that year he opened the North Missouri Normal School in a building known as Cumberland Academy which had been built by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church just before the outbreak of the Civil War. This building stood in the northern part of town on the site of Judge Cooley's private residence, formerly known as the Ringo place. Associated with President Baldwin in the original faculty were Professors F. L. Ferris, W. P. Nason, J. M. Greenwood, Mrs. F. L. Ferris and Mrs. J. M. Greenwood. From the moment President Baldwin decided upon establishing a normal school at Kirksville, he began to labor in behalf of the creation of a system of state normal schools in Missouri, and it was his ambition to build at Kirksville a school of such a character as to commend itself to the State for adoption when a system of normal schools for Missouri should be established. In three years and a half his labor and ambitions were realized. Early in 1870 the Missouri legislature provided for the erection of two state normal schools, and on Dec. 29 of that year the Board of Regents adopted the North Missouri Normal School at Kirksville as the First District Normal School. President Baldwin continued as the head of the school until 1881. The succeeding Presidents have been W. P. Nason (pro tem), 1881-82; Joseph Blanton, 1882-1891; W. D. Dobson, 1891-1899; John R. Kirk, since 1899. The growth of the School during the past half century of its existence has been very gratifying, especially in recent years. The enrollment last year was 1678. The faculty exclusive of assistants now numbers 51. But more important than increase in either the enrollment of students or the faculty has been the raising of the standards of work. All the Normal Schools in Missouri are now Teachers’ Colleges, each of them requiring 120 semester hours or four years of college work above the approved 15 units or four years of high school work for the degree of B. S. in Education. Twenty years ago a graduate from the four years high schools of the State could get the highest diploma then granted by any of the Normal School in one year’s time. Nowadays they can get the highest Normal School diploma only after four years of study. In the effort to bring about the raising of the standards of work in the Normal Schools of Missouri, the one at Kirksville has taken a leading part. 3 (Page 4) JOSEPH BALDWIN, Founder 4 (Page 5) AN INVITATION To all graduates; all former students and teachers, and all the friends of the First District Normal School an invitation is extended to be present in Kirksville August 2 and 3, 1917, to take part in the celebration of the School’s Fiftieth Anniversary. The collecting of them has been difficult and is not as yet complete. Some of the addresses, too, have not been verified, and there are probably many errors. This directory in its incompleteness is publisht with the idea that it is the forerunner of a directory which shall be complete and accurate. There has been some question as to what constitutes a graduate of this Normal School since there have been many different certificates and diplomas. It has been decided that one shall be counted as a graduate who receives a diploma authorizing the holder to teach in any of the public schools of Missouri for life. It is earnestly desired that errors in this directory will be reported promptly; that every one who chances to scan it wall endeavor to assist in making a more nearly perfect list. Kindly report errors and changes at once to P. O. Selby, Registrar, First District Normal School, Kirksville, Mo. YEAR OF GRADUATION 1900 Alice Adams, Mrs. W. J.
