(Page 1) Camp at Rolla Mo, May 22 1863 Dear Father I am well at present. We are camped here at Rolla, but I suppose we will not stay very long. We were to leave here to day [sic] for Pilot Knob, but could not get ready so I think we will stay a day or two yet. This is a hard looking place. It is about as large as Macon City but it does not appear half as well for the houses are half of them built of poles about as big as a mans [sic] leg. The war is all that keeps it up for there is no farming country around here. I forgot to state that I received a letter from you dated the 7th and was very glad to hear that you are all well and that you had received the money that I sent to you. I am glad to hear that you are getting along so well with your work this spring. Tell Mother I think that is quite a joke about the young soldier, I would like to see the little chap the best kind. Tell James I was glad to hear from him. He spoke about all the gals getting along so well for I am interested in their welfare, Tell him to write again as soon as he can conveniently and give me all the news. (Page 2) I would write something about the war, but I guess it is not necessary for you get the news about the same as we do for all the news we get are rumors in camp and newspapers. James spoke about Vicksburg being taken. The papers last night state to the contrary. There is not much dependence to be put in the papers. The war news from some sections are very favorable. I believe there is nothing more of importance at present so I will close hoping that these few lines may come to hand and find you all enjoying the blessings and prosperity. Please write soon again and tell James and the rest to write also. Clark Zeigler (Page 3) Mr. Harrison Zeigler Page Post Adaire Co Mo (Page 4) [BACK OF ENVELOPE]
