(Page 1) Marshall Saline County Mo August the 9 1862 Dear Father and Mother, It is with pleasure I take the present opportunity to let you know that I am well at present and hope these few lines will find you enjoying the same blessing. I was glad to hear from you and glad to here [sic] that you had good crops this year but I am sorry to hear that the secesh are gathering up there but I think ?? here it is worse than it is if it is as bad as you here I wish we could be there a few days I think we could make them skedaddle. About Winters having so many men kild [sic] is false. We have never had a man kild [sic] in our company. About Joseph Hegets recruiting (Page 2) for the U States service I give the flat contradiction if the secesh was as good at fighting as they are at lying they might achieve some great victory especially Morgan Turner. James T. Milliken arrived here on the 30 I believe of July. He is in tolerable good health. He talks some of joining the sharpshooters if he can get the chance. Captain Winters talks of forming them. He has wrote [sic] to the governor to get the privilege of taking all of the men that wants to go with him. Tell Uncle I think he might write to me first if he things anything of me. About the paper you want I can’t get now. I had to borrow ten dolers [sic] to pay for my horse this payday. I pade [sic] Joseph Hegit off. (Page 3) Tell James if he goes into the army I hope he will have good luck and never meet with any disadvantage. I am sorry to think that it comes our lot to engage in such work but it can’t be helped. But since it is so I hope he will always do his duty and if it comes his lot to fall among the slain I think he will meet with a glorious death. Who wouldn’t fight for the liberty that our fore fathers gave to us? None but a rebel. I must close my letter for I have no more to write to you at present. Write soon Please excuse mistakes Remains your son Samuel Clark Zeigler P.S. the talk is that we are a going to leave here tomorrow and go to Hessington. I send my best respects to you all.
