(Front Cover) BULLETIN OF STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE KIRKSVILLE, MISSOURI Volume XXII Nos. 4-5 APRIL-MAY, 1922 Published Monthly by STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE A Brief Study of Salaries in Fourteen Teacher Producing Institutions Representing Twelve States by John R. Kirk, President Entered as second class, mail matter April 29, 1915, at the post office at Kirksville, Missouri, under the Act of Congress of August 24, 1912 Accepted for mailing at special rate of postage provided for in section 1103, Act of October 3, 1917, authorized July 26, 1919 (Page 1) (Page 2) A BRIEF STUDY OF SALARIES IN 14 TEACHER PRODUCING INSTITUTIONS REPRESENT- ING 12 STATES (Made in Feb., 1922, by John R. Kirk, President State Teachers College, Kirksville, Mo) The purpose of this study is to secure a comparison of salary ratings in representative Teachers Colleges that parallel just such functions and curriculums as are found in the Missouri State Teachers Colleges. Tabulations on pages 2, 3 and 4 show the number of persons in each institution receiving the salary ratings listed in the left hand column. These are salaries of professional teachers who are eligible to teach in colleges, who devote their entire time to education and who render service throughout the calendar year for their several institutions. The minimum teaching time is 42 weeks; the maximum, 48 weeks. The intention was to show data from thirty or more of the typical institutions, but some institutions were late in reporting and some of the reports lacked definiteness and therefore were omitted. The 14 institutions reported are, however, representative and therefore serve our purpose. 12 of the 14 are degree-conferring State Teachers Colleges; 9 of these 12 are within seven contiguous states of the Middle West. Albany represents the North Atlantic Coast; Los Angeles, the South Pacific Coast; Greeley, the Rocky Mountain region. The Milwaukee institution is peculiar. It includes a large junior college and also a 2-year college course for teachers. It seems not to be organized on the basis of a typical 4-year Teachers College, although it is a very large school with excellent faculty and equipment. Winona is by law a State Teachers College, but hasn’t yet its senior college classes developed. The Cleveland School of Education is typical of city Teachers Colleges. There are similar institutions in Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and other large cities. In some of the institutions here reported the presidents are furnished homes on the campus free of rent, with fuel, water, light, etc., in addition to the salaries paid. Some of the faculties enjoy benefit of State Pension laws; some are allowed absence on leave one term every third year with salary. Some have other varieties of absence on leave with full salary or part salary. Some have no pension benefits and no leave of absence with pay. The salary rates are here placed in three groups, upper third, $8000 to $3500; middle third, $3486 to $2500; lower third, $2490 to $1000. The bottom of page 4 shows the faculties to vary considerably in size. The Cleveland School of Education has the smallest faculty, 27 in number, and the highest average salary-rate, $3773; the Los Angeles institution, now having the name Southern Branch of the University of California, has the largest faculty, 128, and the lowest salary rate, $2434 Page 5 shows rates of salary increase in 12 institutions that were studied two years ago this February in the same manner and for similar purposes. (Page 3) HOW TO READ THE FOLLOWING TABULATION Illustration: In the left hand column find $4500. Reading to the right in that line find 13 under Kalamazoo, 5 under Albany, 9 under Terre Haute, 18 under Ypsilanti. This means a salary of $4500 received by each of 13 persons at Kalamazoo, 5 at Albany, 9 at Terre Haute, 18 at Ypsilanti. This page gives the number at each salary in the upper third of all the salaries. Eligibility rules require faculty members to have a minimum of five years expensive preparation in colleges and universities above high school. Many faculty members have six to seven years of such preparation. Figures in numbers 1 to 9 inclusive are from the United States Department of Labor as shown in Labor Review during the latter part of 1921. Figures cover 1913, 1919, 1920 and 1921. Interpretation: Take numbers 3 and 10. Bricklayers in 1913 received about $1600, Kirksville faculty about $1600; in 1920 and 1921 bricklayers received about $2900, faculty members nearly $2700. The government reports omit data of numbers 1 to 9 as to preparation above high school and cost of the same if there was any such preparation. 1. Blacksmiths 2. Boiler Makers 3. Bricklayers 4.
